Ergonomics: Designing for People and the Way They Work

Ergonomics: Designing for People and the Way They Work

When it comes to ergonomics, one size does not fit all. That is why it’s important to take a holistic approach and consider everyone who will be using the product or system.

When people are buying home office setups, let's think about some questions. What are their needs? What do they want from the design? How can we make this work for them? The result is an ergonomic experience – where people feel good about what they need to do and how they’re doing it.

Ergonomics is a science-based discipline that brings together knowledge from other subjects such as anatomy and physiology, psychology, engineering and statistics to ensure that designs complement the strengths and abilities of people. Ergonomists do this by using different methods to understand what makes an ergonomic product or system work for everyone – not just some of the people. Through research, observation and testing we’re able to understand what works for individuals, groups or whole populations – helping you create ergonomic products and systems that work well together in your unique circumstances.

Let's take a look at an office chair. Typically office chairs are classified as ergonomic when they have an adjustable seat height, seat depth and lumbar support. This means that you should be able to adjust the height of the chair so that your legs are perpendicular to the floor and the seat pan should allow you to adjust it so that you're able to sit comfortably. Proper lumbar support allows there to be ample support for the lower back so that your spine is in just the right position to allow for good posture. Ergonomic itself is not a type of chair, it is more of the improved support the chair provides.

To be productive and happy at work, you need to have ergonomics in your life. An ergonomic chair is a good place to start if you want more comfort while working. It will help improve your posture and reduce the physical strain on your body so that stress levels are lowered. If it’s time for an upgrade or even just a change of scenery, we can get you set up with any type of office furniture from our wide selection available!
